Who We Are
Impacting Around the Banana
What does impacting around the banana mean? We are a 9 coconut farm coop in a specific area of Costa Rica that is dominated by the big brand banana farms that surround us. We have over 100 workers that work at the farms of our sister company (Coconut Investment Group- CIG) so building up this community is very important to us. This lead us to start our non profit called CIG Green whose mission is to help the local community primarily focused on the kids and their schools.
We are focused on impacting these schools by (but not limited too) building playgrounds, adding computer labs, providing computer equipment, providing after school tuturing and much more.
While on top of this we are helping the environment. See how our Sponsor a Tree program is changing kids lifes and both through educaiton and taking care of the planet at the same time. Learn more about this program by clicking here.
Our Mission
The Area in Need
This area is Caribbean side of Costa Rica east of the capital San Jose. It is known as one of the poorest areas of Costa Rica where the wages are low and education is lagging behind. There are many opportunities to help with area with and it all starts with the kids and the schools. It also means creating more jobs and helping the local farmers grow their farms. See how we are planning to make an impact in all these areas with these Key Areas of Focus.
Key Areas of Focus
Kids and the Schools
The biggest focus in our mission is helping these kids and schools in the following ways:
-
Building Playgrounds: Its hard to imagine a school for kids with no playground but that is the case for most schools in this area. We are planning to add playgrounds to multiple schools.
-
Building Computer Labs: There is a huge technology divide in this area where most kids do not have access to a computer and we want to change that by adding a specific area where kids can share access to computers
-
Computer Equipment: We recently heard of a school in this area that has 54 students sharing one i pad. This is not acceptable to us and we are working to change this by providing computers and ipads where each student has access to them.
-
After School Tutoring: Many of these kids come home to an empty house as the parents are still working in the farms. Many of the parents also cant help the kids with the reading, writing and math skills as they too are not fully versed to be able to teach their kids. This is why we feel after school tutoring is key to helping these kids do and complete their homework.
Helping the Enviornment and the Local Farmers
Your coconut tree adoption provides certified Malaysian seedlings to farmers who presently are living in extreme poverty in Costa Rica. CIG Green provides the seedlings for free while in an agreement with the largest coconut farm in Central America Coconut Investment Group (74,000 coconut trees) pro bono provides the expertise. At the end of the planting and growth cycle with a contract in hand the farmer will sell 100% of their fruit thus generating income for the family, creating entrepreneurs, and developing jobs for others.
You are not only helping the environment by adopting a tree but with every tree adopted we will plant another. Your adoption yields benefit from day 1 and continues well into the future as the tree matures and yields dividends for 30 years for the farmer/entrepreneur.
So, join CIG Green and other corporations/individuals to adopt a coconut tree and know you are contributing to the dignity, economic development and entrepreneurial spirit that made you who you are today. Share with those and lets plant coconut trees in beautiful Costa Rica.
